“The competition was an amazing experience,” said Ms Turliuk after returning from Sao Paulo. “We received a lot of great feedback from the judges, learned to communicate in a city that speaks predominantly Portuguese, and brought home new ideas and contacts that will be beneficial to the business.”
The Latin MOOT Corp Competition invited seven teams to present their pitches to venture capitalists and industry experts from around South America at FGV University in Sao Paulo. Ms Turliuk (COMM’10) was part of the only team from outside South America. The others were from Brazil and Argentina.
Her team, WIFLI, took home second place and the Outstanding Presentation Award in the competition. WIFLI is wireless internet Whenever I Feel Like It, offering free and premium wireless internet options at universities in Australia and New Zealand. While on exchange in Perth, Australia, Ms Turliuk noticed a distinct lack of wireless internet available at her university campus and others. She developed a model to offer students free wireless internet and supplement this by providing companies with targeted, measurable advertising options for reaching millennials.
Before competing in the Latin MOOT Corp Competition, WIFLI placed second and took home $6,000 from Canada’s largest undergraduate international business plan competition, the Queen’s Entrepreneurs’ Competition.
