Sparking a discussion on accessibility
A key part of the university’s new Accessibility Framework is ongoing communication and consultation with the Queen’s and broader communities.
“One way of doing this is engaging the community in sharing their ideas in support of the university’s commitment to the interests and needs of persons with disabilities,” says Irène Bujara, Director, Equity Office.
An upcoming town hall is aimed at contributing to a collaborative community at Queen’s where all members are safe, valued and respected. It provides an opportunity to update the community on the progress of the framework, designed to help Queen’s comply with the provincial government’s accessibility standards under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), 2005. This information could spark conversations on campus about how best to integrate accessibility into the day-to-day functions of departments and units.
The AODA mandates customer service, information and communication, employment, built environment, and where applicable, transportation standards for public institutions. The Queen’s framework includes a fifth working group focused on education, training, and awareness.
Details about the town hall are posted on the Equity Office Facebook page.
