Tom Williams has been a dedicated member of the Queen’s community since his arrival in 1977. He joined Queen’s as the Dean of the Faculty of Education and since then has served the University in a variety of management positions, including Vice-Principal Operations and Vice-Principal Institutional Relations, and in 2008-2009 its 19th Principal He is Professor Emeritus of both Education and Policy Studies, and continues to research actively in both fields.
Each year, the Toronto Branch of the Alumni Association honours an individual with the John Orr Award as recognition of his or her service to the University. Says Toronto Branch president Elaine Wu, Artsci’98, MIR’00, Law ‘03, “The award is the highest honour given out by our Branch. It’s given to those who have made significant contributions to the life and welfare of Queen’s University. Past recipients include notable members of the University community, such as Padre Laverty, Agnes Benidickson, and Bill and Claire Leggett.”
“I am very flattered and surprised to be named the 2011 winner of the John Orr Award,” says Williams. “It’s personally humbling because I know the names of past honorees. To be included in this list is a tremendous honour.”
Elizabeth Ireland, Artsci’96, a member of the Award selection committee, explains, “Dr. Williams has been an important member of the Queen’s community for 34 years. He’s known for his dedication and service to the University and to the Kingston community.” Ireland also notes that “Williams stepped up to the plate when Queen’s truly needed leadership, and as Principal, steered the University through a challenging time. He is deserving of this award for his longstanding service and we know it means a lot to him.”
For his part, Williams says, “Queen’s is home. It’s like a family and a tremendous support network. It’s the best place that I’ve ever worked.”
