Appointments

University Registrar — John Metcalfe

Vice-Provost and Dean of Student Affairs Ann Tierney is pleased to announce the appointment of John Metcalfe as university registrar, effective February 4, 2013.

Dr. Metcalfe is currently registrar at the University of Regina, where he has worked since 2009. Before moving west, he spent more than 15 years in registrarial services in Ontario's post-secondary education sector, first at Western University (Huron) and then at Wilfrid Laurier University, where he served two terms as university registrar and two years as director of information and privacy and ombudsperson. In his positions as university registrar, he has championed significant changes, introducing new technologies, processes and procedures to enhance services to students, faculty and staff.

Dr. Metcalfe has a PhD in philosophy from Western, an MA in philosophy from Johns Hopkins University and a MA and BA (honours) in philosophy from York University.

Ms Tierney wishes to recognize and thank Teresa Alm, Associate University Registrar (Student Awards), for taking on the role of interim university registrar for the past year. Ms Alm will continue in the position until Dr. Metcalfe's arrival.

Ms Tierney also thanks the members of the advisory committee who assisted with this search.

Headship Committee — Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology

Michael McGrath’s second term as head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology will end on June 30, 2013. In accordance with the Senate document governing the Appointment of Clinical/Academic Department Heads that was approved on March 26, 2009, the Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic) of Queen’s University and the chief executive officers of Hotel Dieu Hospital and Kingston General Hospital have established a joint search committee to provide advice on the headship and the present state and future prospects of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

Faculty, staff, students, residents and all other members of the hospital and university communities, are invited to submit their comments, in writing, on the present state and future prospects of the department as well as the names of possible candidates for the headship and the reasons for supporting each nominee. Written submissions are to be directed to the co-chairs c/o Gail Knutson, Faculty of Health Sciences, Macklem House, 18 Barrie Street, Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, K7L 3N6 and electronic submissions can be forwarded to gail.knutson@queensu.ca. While submissions will be accepted throughout the search process, it will be advantageous for the committee to have them early on. Please note that committee members are required to maintain confidentiality regarding the committee’s deliberations; comments, which are shared with committee members, are also confidential. Anonymous submissions will not be considered.

Headship Committee — Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

Stephen Bagg’s first term as head of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation will end on June 30, 2013 and Dr. Bagg has indicated that he is willing to be considered for reappointment. The procedure to be followed in reviewing the headship is the Modified Reappointment Process for Heads of Clinical Departments. In accordance with this document, a joint committee has been established to provide advice to the Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic) of Queen’s University and the chief executive officers of Hotel Dieu Hospital, Kingston General Hospital and Providence Care on the reappointment of Dr. Bagg and the present state and future prospects of the department. The membership of the committee is:

Headship Committee — Robert M. Buchan Department of Mining

Laeeque Daneshmend was recently appointed Deputy Provost at Queen’s University. With this appointment it is necessary to commence a search for his successor as head of the Robert M. Buchan Department of Mining.

In accordance with the terms of Article 41 of the Collective Agreement between Queen’s University Faculty Association and Queen’s University, a selection committee will be formed to consider the present state and future prospects of the department and to assist the Provost and Vice Principal (Academic) in the selection of a department head. Members of the bargaining unit will elect five members. Faculty, staff and students are also invited to nominate staff and students from the Robert M. Buchan Department of Mining and faculty from cognate disciplines, for membership on the selection committee. Pension Plan annual general meeting to be held in December

The annual meeting of the Queen's Pension Plan will be held at 1 pm on Friday, December 7, 2012, in Dunning Hall Auditorium. All plan members are invited to attend.
