Contingent of Canadian soldiers will remain on the ground after withdrawal
Queen’s University professor Kim Richard Nossal is available to comment on Canadian troops withdrawing from Afghanistan on December 12.
Dr. Nossal said there actually will be a small contingent of Canadian soldiers still on the ground to continue to help Afghanistan rebuild.
“We are actually not out of Afghanistan – what has come to an end is Operation ATHENA (our operation in Kabul 2003-2005 and Kandahar 2005-2011),” said Dr. Nossal, director of the Centre for International and Defence Policy at Queen’s University. “Our troops remain in Afghanistan, in Operation ATTENTION. They are very much in harm’s way.”
Dr. Nossal is studying the politics of the Afghanistan mission in both Canada and Australia, and was in Kandahar and Kabul in January 2010.
Dr. Nossal is available only for phone interviews.
