Harlequin Romances' 60th Anniversary

Harlequin Romances, a Canadian company, is celebrating its 60th anniversary. They are the world's biggest publisher of bodice rippers and even in a recession, North American sales rose $3 million in the fourth quarter of 2008.
Film and media professor Sidney Eve Matrix says that when we think about early adopters of techno-gadgetry, the stereotype that comes to mind is not likely to map neatly onto the target market for Harlequin romance fiction. However, Harlequin's long history of new media and e-commerce initiatives (including downloadable digital books, online contests, discussions, communities, blogs, and user-generated reviews) point to how tech-savvy their audience is.
