Ontario looking to overhaul energy sector

Queen’s University School of Policy Studies professor and energy expert Warren Mabee is available to talk about media reports that the Ontario government is looking to overhaul the province’s energy sector, including selling off distribution utilities and merging two planning agencies.

“Changes considered for Ontario’s energy sector are clearly designed to raise money over the short term. Selling local distribution companies is a move which would further isolate communities from decision-making around the power grid. At a time when Ontarians are becoming increasingly vocal in opposing new energy developments, this move could backfire and create more trouble for the government,” says Dr. Mabee, who is the director of the Queen’s University Institute for Energy and Environmental Policy.
