Ontario seeks to stop teachers' Friday protest

Queen’s University labour law expert Kevin Banks is available to talk about the Ontario government going to the Ontario Labour Relations Board for a cease-and-desist order to prevent Ontario public School teachers from walking off the job on Friday.

Premier Dalton McGuinty calls the walkout an illegal strike while the teachers union says it is a political protest protected by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Prof. Banks is a lawyer and the director of the Centre for Law in the Contemporary Workplace at Queen’s University. He can address any legal questions rising from the dispute. He notes there was a similar legal debate during British Columbia’s teacher dispute.

Please note that Prof. Banks is only available for phone interviews and has limited availability after 3 p.m. on Thursday, January 9.

To arrange an interview, please contact communication officers Michael Onesi (office: 613.533.6000 ext. 77513, michael.onesi@queensu.ca) or Anne Craig (office: 613-533-2877, Anne.Craig@queensu.ca) at Queen’s University News and Media Services Department in Kingston, Ont., Canada.
