Queen's University expert comments on the situation in Ukraine

2014-02-26

Queen’s University Ukraine expert George Perlin is available to comment on the current situation in the European country that has been ripped apart by violence and riots. In the latest news, Russian President Vladimir Putin has put his country’s military on alert. This move could raise tensions in Ukraine as well as suspicions that Russian is planning an intervention.

Dr. Perlin was recognized for his contribution to democratic reform in the Ukraine and was elected as an international member of Ukraine's National Academy of Pedagogical Science.

“Whatever the immediate political outcome from the Euromaidan protests, the strains to which the protests gave rise will continue to pose an existential threat to the Ukrainian state,” says Dr. Perlin, an emeritus professor in the School of Policy Studies. “While the protests have been interpreted through the lens of a geopolitical conflict between Russia and the established liberal-democracies, they actually reflect a deeper and more complex set of factors that have eroded the legitimacy of both existing political institutions and the entire political elite.”

Dr. Perlin was also director of two projects funded by CIDA to establish a program of education in the study of democracy for the universities, technical colleges, and secondary schools of Ukraine.

Please note Dr. Perlin is only available for phone interviews.
