CBC Sports Day in Canada coming to Queen's
Queen’s and Kingston have been chosen by CBC Sports, ParticipACTION and True Sport as the inaugural hosts of ‘Sports Day In Canada’ on Saturday, September 18.
Students, alumni, faculty, staff and Kingston-area sports teams and clubs are encouraged to wear their team jerseys and come and cheer on the Gaels on national TV.
CBC Sports will broadcast live segments from the Athletics and Recreation Centre (ARC) beginning at noon and will air a celebration of the 100th anniversary of Queen’s women’s basketball, as the Gaels take on McGill in a free exhibition match starting at 4 pm.
“We are thrilled to be a part of this exciting national event,” says Principal Daniel Woolf. “This is a wonderful opportunity for Queen’s and Kingston to showcase our student athletes, our tremendous school spirit, our history, and our state-of-the-art facilities to the nation.”
The Queen’s and Kingston communities are invited to campus throughout the day to watch several Queen’s sporting events and take part in activities including free membership to the ARC for the day, fitness classes, an open swim, and a youth basketball clinic.
The defending Vanier Cup Champions will be in Guelph on Saturday to play the Gryphons. Athletics & Recreation will host a viewing party of the football game (starting at 1 pm on theSCORE) and Sports Day in Canada coverage in the Alumni Lounge at the ARC.
“Our city and university have a tremendous history and reputation for participation in sport. It is an important part of our community fabric and we are delighted to be a part of this historic day and share in the festivities,” says Leslie Dal Cin, Director of Athletics & Recreation. “We look forward to welcoming everyone to the Athletics and Recreation Centre and our outdoor fields to help celebrate Sports Day in Canada.”
All Queen’s varsity team & club student-athletes will be wearing their jerseys on Friday, September 17th -- National Jersey Day -- to raise awareness of Sports Day in Canada.
