Human Resources expands administrative certificate program
Human Resources (HR) has created a new Administrative Professionals at Queen’s (APAQ) Master Certificate for staff members who want to further enhance their skills in the areas of strategic thinking, relationship building and business communications.
“Staff members have requested new professional development opportunities at a more advanced level. This new Master Certificate is an exciting option that meets that need,” says Julie Mekarski, Director, Client Services, Human Resources. “The Master Certificate gives staff members valuable tools for supporting the university’s strategic priorities as outlined in the academic and research plans and Principal Woolf’s vision document, The Third Juncture.”
The APAQ Master Certificate is composed of 10 workshops, eight core and two electives. The workshops, geared for staff members who have five years of professional experience, are customized to include Queen’s specific information. All facilitators are experts in their field, including several Queen’s faculty and staff members.
Sandra Turcotte, Administrative Co-ordinator, School of Rehabilitation Therapy, strongly encourages her staff to pursue the APAQ certificates. She believes these programs are a unique opportunity for administrative professionals to hone their skills as they take on new roles and responsibilities at Queen’s.
“Sometimes the staff members in our office worry about missing work, but I tell them ‘the work will be here when you get back, just go to the workshop,’” she says. “They don’t regret taking the workshops because of the knowledge they gain. They have a real sense of accomplishment when they complete the APAQ certificate.”
The new APAQ Master Certificate and the revamped APAQ Certificate are just two of the several certificate programs and individual workshops offered by HR. Visit the learning catalogue for more information about those options and other professional and personal development opportunities.
