Queen's staffer honoured for leadership
Kevin Rose, of the Faculty of Education has been recognized for his leadership abilities by his alma mater, Trent University.
Mr. Rose, onsite program coordinator for the Aboriginal Teacher Education Program (ATEP) received the 2009 Young Leader Award at a ceremony at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa on May 23.
Mr. Roseworks out of the ATEP office in M’Chigeeng First Nation on Manitoulin Island. He is the first First Nations person to achieve both professional economic development designation and professional aboriginal economic development designation. He is also the apprenticeship coordinator for the Kenjgewin Teg Educational Institute, and runs a professional consulting firm.
Mr. Rose never imagined he would be the recipient of such an honour. Before university, he says, “I hit rock bottom, and had no stable home situation for months. I never thought I’d have the opportunity to go to university, let alone receive an award like this.” The award is a wonderful recognition of years of hard work, he says.
