Information for Students

The Office of the University Ombudsman provides an independent, impartial, and confidential office through which students may pursue the just, fair, and equitable resolution of University-related concerns including academic and non-academic matters. The Ombudsman and the Associate, Policy and Appeals (a member of the Office of the University Ombudsman), are available to provide independent advice and support to students who have questions about any of the appeal and dispute resolution processes, or who may be affected in the course of the resolution of complaints.

A university ombudsperson [1]:

  • acts as a source of information and advice on rules and procedures
  • is concerned with the rights of every person to be treated fairly
  • investigates complaints of unfair treatment in an impartial and objective manner
  • when complaints are unfounded, explains why
  • has the power to recommend solutions when complaints are well-founded
  • helps to identify systemic problems and weaknesses in institutional policy and practice
