Title:  “Geometry and Philosophical Method from Zabarella to Spinoza”

ABSTRACT

In this paper, I shall argue for a new reading of Spinoza’s use of the geometrical method of demonstration as he employs it in his Ethics. I contrast a number of serious internal failings in Spinoza’s system with some of its monumental successes, drawing comparisons with predecessors including the Renaissance Aristotelian Jacopo Zabarella, whose works De Methodis and De Regressus influenced numerous scholars including Galileo, Descartes, and Hobbes, in the development of modern scientific method. In particular, Hobbes and Spinoza both argue for a human nature subject to the same method of examination and inquiry – because it involves the same laws and necessity – as the rest of the natural world. Ultimately, I argue that the role method plays in these revisionist accounts of humanity, however flawed its (geometrical) use may be, is of paramount importance for a proper understanding of similarities and differences between the moral and political systems of Hobbes and Spinoza.
