Abstract:

The landmark discovery of the Higgs boson at the LHC calls for reassessing its possible significance for cosmology. I will argue that the Higgs boson may indeed be playing the role of a portal to the dark sector, and will give a modern day appraisal of several such possibilities. Specifically, I will review the status of the minimal model of electroweak scale WIMP dark matter coupled to the Standard Model via the Higgs portal. I then move to the subject of light sub-MeV dark sector particles, communicating with the SM via the Higgs boson and other portals, and show how the combination of astrophysical and cosmological data, as well as direct detection techniques and beam dump experiments, limit such possibilities.
