Abstract:

Throughout the physical sciences, entropy stands out as an enigmatic concept that plays an important role in the structure and behavior of many systems of matter. I will describe how work on soft, colloidal matter has delivered a richer understanding of entropy as more than a quantifier of disorder. I will describe how this change in perspective is driving the development of new approaches for solving design challenges that occur in systems that range in scale from tens of nanometres to hundreds of metres.
