Job Title: Canada Research Chair in Theoretical Particle Astrophysics
The Department of Physics, Engineering Physics and Astronomy at Queen’s University and the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics (PI) invite applications for a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair (CRC 1) in Theoretical Particle Astrophysics. The candidate will have an appointment as a Professor at Queen’s and as an Associate Faculty member at Perimeter. The Department and Perimeter are seeking an established physicist with an international reputation for research excellence in theoretical particle astrophysics and a demonstrated record of exemplary teaching and researcher supervision. The successful candidate will be based primarily at Queen’s but will be able to spend significant amounts of time at both locations. The position will come with a reduced teaching load at Queen’s, and an additional salary stipend and research support from Perimeter.

Queen’s is playing a lead role in the establishment of the Canadian Particle Astrophysics Research Centre (CPARC), an ambitious new program funded by the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF). A major goal of CPARC includes building a powerful research team contributing to the many diverse requirements of a world-leading particle astrophysics research program. This includes the development of particle astrophysics experiments and theory, observational and theoretical astrophysics, detector design, and the development of tools and techniques for calibration, material screening and low level radio-purification. To achieve this, CPARC aims to benefit from and strengthen cross-disciplinary expertise at Queen’s between Physics, Engineering Physics and Astronomy (particle astrophysics and detector development), Chemistry (radio-analytical chemistry), Geological Sciences (Facility for Isotopic Research) and Mechanical and Materials Engineering (Reactor Materials Testing Laboratory). The University anticipates hiring seven new faculty members associated with CPARC, including a tenure-track particle astrophysics theorist, to complement its current team of research scientists, engineers, technicians, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students. An additional seven faculty hires are being strategically targeted at collaborating institutions across Canada to significantly enhance this world-renowned particle astrophysics program. Perimeter Institute is a rapidly growing independent centre for fundamental research in theoretical physics. The Institute offers an exceptional research environment and is currently staffed with 37 full-time and part-time faculty members, 53 Distinguished Visiting Research Chairs, 55 Postdoctoral Researchers, 52 Resident PhD students, and 28 Master’s students participating in the Perimeter Scholars International program; in addition, Perimeter hosts hundreds of visitors and conference participants throughout the academic year. Particle physics represents both a lively area of research at Perimeter Institute and an area of rapid growth.

The successful candidate for this position will have a research program that aligns with the research goals of PI and the Particle Astrophysics group at Queen’s, and will be expected to lead the research effort at Queen’s in Theoretical Particle Astrophysics. This will include developing a research group consisting of several postdoctoral fellows and graduate students and working with the tenure-track Particle Astrophysics Theorist being hired as part of CPARC. In addition, the successful candidate will also be expected to develop and maintain a strong link between PI and Queen’s and researchers at SNOLAB.
