Fire Syringe

fire syringe

When the piston in this apparatus is pushed down the tube quickly, the air in the tube is heated by compression and tinder placed inside the tube can be ignited. This demonstrates 'adiabatic heating' ('adiabatic' is from the Greek word for impassable; the change in volume and pressure occurs too rapidly to allow heat exchange with the surroundings). The glass tube was originally about two inches longer.
