First Beam Neutrino Results from MINOS

Abstract:

MINOS is a long-baseline neutrino oscillation study, using accelerator neutrinos from Fermilab's Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI) beamline. It has two detectors: a 1 kton near detector at Fermilab and a 5.4 kton far detector, located 735 km away in the Soudan Mine in Minnesota. The primary goal of the experiment is to make a precision measurement of the parameters governing the oscillations seen in atmospheric neutrinos. This talk will describe the first accelerator muon neutrino disappearance results from MINOS, based on the first 9 months of beam data.
