Moving-Coil Galvanometer

Moving-Coil Galvanometer

This galvanometer consists of a reflective disk attached to a wire coil suspended between the poles of a permanent magnet. When a direct current passes through the coil, it generates a magnetic field which interacts with the permanent magnet to cause the suspended coil (and its attached disk) to rotate. A light beam incident on the reflective disk will be directed to a calibrated scale so the degree of deflection, and hence the current, can be determined. This was made by Gambrell Bros. & Co. of London, England and dates from the early 20th century.
