Abstract:

With the growing demand for electricity world-wide, the anticipated depletion of oil and gas reserves and the increasing concern of the effects of greenhouse gases on the world's climate, interest in nuclear power has grown dramatically over the last several years. Major nuclear projects are being planned in numerous countries around the world, including Canada. As a world-leader in nuclear technology, AECL and Canada have much to offer in addressing this renaissance through its CANDU technology, developed and evolved since the late 1940's.

This presentation will provide a brief history of AECL and the development of CANDU technology, including its most recent product - the Advanced CANDU Reactor (ACR). The important role of R&D in advancing CANDU nuclear technology and supporting the nuclear industry will be the central theme of this presentation.

Refreshments will be served at 3:25 pm.
