Abstract:

Self organization in nature provides fascinating structures. Many of them have "advanced" optical properties and functionalities. I will focus on one of the natural mechanisms of color generation that is based on the periodic helicoidal molecular organization. I will then describe the optical non reciprocity properties generated by such structures. Simple theoretical model and experimental evidence will be presented. The mechanisms which might have favored the development of such structures will be discussed.
