Joan Haysom
SUNLAB - University of Ottawa

Friday, December 14, 2012
1:30 PM @ Stirling A

The SUNLAB, housed at the University of Ottawa's School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, is Canada's premier solar cell characterization research facility. Much of the SUNLAB's research is in collaborations with Canadian partners such as Cyrium Technologies, Opel and Morgan Solar in concentrated photovoltaics (CPV). Our work stretches from semiconductor physics modelling of multilayer III/V solar cells, laboratory testing of cells using high power solar simulators, to outdoor test site evaluation of completed and tracked systems, including solar resource monitoring. With significant data sets now accumulated from the test sites, recent works have involve energy yield modelling using measured and simulated meteorological inputs. The talk will be provide an overview of CPV technology and underlying physics, as well as the methodologies and research findings of the SUNLAB. Future research and collaborations in the field of PV energy yield in the Ontario context, and the role of community ownership of renewable energy will also be discussed.
