Study of Dark Matter in Galaxies Using FaNTOmM

Abstract:

Recent developments in Photon Counting Cameras make the use of Halpha data much more attractive to obtain high resolution kinematical data of spiral and dwarf galaxies. This type of data is essential (as compared to low spatial resolution HI data) since models of the mass distribution are more sensitive to the gradient of the inner parts of Rotation Curves (RC) than to their extent. This is demonstrated with the results obtained with the camera FaNTOmM, developed at first for the Observatoire du mont Megantic but since then used on the CFHT and the 3,6m at ESO/La Silla. In the last 5 years, large samples (Virgo, barred spirals, SINGS) were observed with this camera. One must handle these data very careful since the RCs do not only trace the gravitational potential.
