Testing Lepton Universality using B(tau->mu nu nu)

Abstract:

Measuring the branching ratios is intrinsically interesting simply because it allows us better to understand the particle, but, in addition, an elegant test of the Standard Model prediction of lepton universality can be conducted using only the branching ratios of the to leptons. I will describe the latest OPAL measurement of the branching ratio B(tau->mu nu nu), which is used to test lepton universality, and discuss other methods of testing this prediction. In addition, this branching ratio result has been used to augment some of the constraints on physics beyond the Standard Model. These results will also be presented.
