The department extends congratulations to Dr. Elizabeth Goodyear-Grant who has been awarded the Pierre Savard Award for her book, Gendered News: Media Coverage and Electoral Politics in Canada. This award from the International Council for Canadian Studies (ICCS) recognizes an exceptional scholarly work that contributes to a better understanding of Canada. More information on this prestigious award can be found at the ICCS website:

In Gendered News, Elizabeth Goodyear-Grant examines gendered media coverage, including interviews with MPs and party leaders as well as print and television election coverage, to reveal a political climate in Canada that not only detrimentally affects the success of women in office but could deter women from running in the first place.

"Gendered News is the first book on gender, media, and politics in Canada, and it adds hugely to scholarly debate about the role played by the mass media in political life. It examines gendered reporting from three angles: how it is manifested in election news coverage, who is responsible for generating it, and its impact on audience reception. Goodyear-Grant’s rich analysis incorporates interviews with twenty-seven members of Parliament, including former party leaders, who provide their understandings of media bias."
-- Linda Trimble, co-editor of Stalled: The Representation of Women in Canadian Governments

Gendered News was also shortlisted for the 2014 Donald Smiley Prize from the Canadian Political Studies Association. For more information on the book, please visit the publisher's website: UBC Press.
