Congratulations Claire Gummo,
Rhodes Scholar-elect

The Department is proud to extend congratulations to Claire Gummo, class of 2017, for being awarded the Rhodes Scholarship. This prestigious recognition promotes the future development of students who demonstrate leadership in both their academic career and broader community. Ms. Gummo's participation in the Queen's and larger Kingston community is demonstrative of this leadership, working on initiatives to raise awareness around issues of sexual violence and promote safe spaces on campus as well as serving as a gender consultant to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and working on gender and defense issues with the Centre for International and Defense Policy at Queen's.

The Politics Department and the Centre for International and Defence Policy have been key in shaping my research interests. Thus far, my research has been concerned with women, peace, and security. At Oxford, I hope to study the role of sexual violence in security organizations. I am very grateful to my professors, TAs, and fellow students who have been nothing but generous with their time and gracious with their support. Queen's Politics will always be home, and I am looking forward to representing the department abroad.

The Rhodes Scholar program selects an annual class of 95 scholars from countries around the world, 11 from Canada, to pursue post-graduate studies at Oxford University. The scholarship recognizes young women and men of outstanding intellect, character, leadership, and commitment to service, who demonstrate a propensity to emerge as 'leaders for the world's future.' One of the great things about teaching in the Department of Political Studies is watching our students succeed. And among the highest measures of academic success in the world is to be recognized with a Rhodes scholarship.  Throughout Queen’s 175 years there have only been 56 chosen for this honour.  We are thrilled and proud to recognize that our own Claire Gummo will be the 57th Rhodes Scholar. Congratulations to Claire for representing the Department of Political Studies and the University with distinction.
