Ognen Vangelov, PhD Candidate, Earns Prestigious Vanier Scholarship

The Department offers congratulations to Ognen Vangelov, who is one of six Queen's students awarded the prestigious Vanier Scholarship this year. The Vanier CGS program aims to help Canadian institutions attract and retain highly qualified doctoral researchers across the social sciences and/or humanities, natural sciences and/or engineering and health. Overall, the Vanier Scholarship strives to establish a global status for Canada as a centre for excellence in research higher learning. Ognen is the only Queen's candidate from the Humanities to receive this honour this year.

Ognen's doctoral project addresses the question of democratic regression into authoritarianism and the problem of “un-democratization.” He intends to take a closer look at the phenomenon using Hungary and Macedonia as case studies.

“Hearing the news that my Vanier application had been successful was exciting,” he says. “It is a huge privilege, but concurrently, it is a great responsibility. The Vanier Award encourages me to work further, to work better. It stimulates me to work harder,” underlines Vangelov.
