Message from the Manager

A new carpool program has been introduced to Queen's University campus to encourage the reduction of single occupancy vehicle use. The benefits to registered participants include:

  • sharing vehicle expense costs
  • reducing the amount of stress from driving alone
  • the ability to use special parking permits for emergencies when they are required to bring their personal vehicle to campus
  • reduction in parking fees
  • a reserved parking spot (available only for registered carpool groups of three or more).
Comments and suggestions about our carpool program are most welcome.

Regulations

Individuals who have self-identified a carpool group (minimum two people) should come directly to the Parking Office to complete a carpool application. Carpool permits are subject to all regulations under the parking regulations for motor vehicles.

To create a two-person carpool, two current parkers must be willing to surrender a valid parking permit and convert the remaining valid parking permit to a carpool permit. To establish a three-person carpool and be eligible for a 25% reduction on the rate of an individual permit and a reserved parking spot, at least two of the applicants will have to surrender their valid parking permits and the remaining permit would be converted to a carpool permit. Permits are valid for the parking year 1 July - 30 June and must be renewed annually. A list of persons participating in the carpool must be supplied upon renewal.

Main Campus Permits will be issued in the following order of priority on a space available basis:

New applicants who live in Zone 1 / Carpool.
New applicants who live in Zone 1.
New applicants who live in Zone 2 / Carpool.
New applicants who live in Zone 2.

No carpool permits will be issued to Zone 3 residents.

A carpool permit is the authorization granted by the Parking Office for persons listed as carpool participants to use. A registered carpool permit allows the carpool participants to park a motor vehicle in a parking lot in accordance with these regulations. A two-person carpool permit guarantees a space to park a motor vehicle but does not guarantee parking in any particular lot or location. Carpool permits issued for three or more participants will be entitled to a reserved parking spot in a chosen location. Each permit for carpooling will bear a unique number for identification purposes. All vehicles using the transferable carpool permit must be registered with Parking Services. Carpool permits must be prominently displayed. If cars are rotated among the group, it is the carpool members' responsibility to ensure that the permit is displayed on the vehicle that is driven to campus. Failure to display permit will result in ticketing of vehicle.

Only one registered vehicle in a carpool can be parked on the lots or on-street parking at one time with the carpool permit displayed. Each carpool will be issued three one-day permits. These one-day permits may be used if your carpool requires more than one vehicle on the lots on-street parking at one time.
