A statement regarding sexual assault report and draft policy

June 1, 2015

In November 2014, I asked the university’s Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Working Group (SAPRWG) to expedite its specific recommendations for the university on enhancing and creating programs and initiatives that address sexual assault. Today, the group released its report, which includes a draft standalone sexual assault policy. I wish to thank the members of the group, as well as the policy subcommittee, for their work, which is a significant step in the university’s process of addressing sexual assault on our campus. I am also grateful to the many Queen’s and Kingston community members who participated in the group’s extensive consultation process, ensuring that many voices were heard. While no one should have to experience sexual assault, it’s important that the university has clear policies and resources in place to address sexual violence. The report includes several recommendations, and a team will be established to exercise oversight of, and set priorities and timelines for, the implementation of the report’s recommendations, working in consultation with the working group and its policy sub-committee.
