The standardization of commonly used furniture products allows Queen's to select and procure quality furniture products that address the following criteria: aesthetics, durability, ergonomics, functionality, life-cycle cost, maintenance, non-obsolescence, performance, safety, sustainability and warranty.

These standards were established from industry-wide accepted standards, and are intended to provide manufacturers, designers, and users with a common basis for evaluating safety, durability and the structural adequacy of the specified furniture, independent of construction materials. The evaluation of the furniture product included standards and test methods from: ANSI (American National Standards Institute), BIFMA (Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturer's Association), ASTM (American Society for Testing Materials), CSA (Canadian Standards Association), CGSB (Canadian General Standards Board), NFPA (National Fire Protection Agency), California Technical Bulletin #117 117 Section E - Class 1 (for upholstery flammability).

The furniture product has also been tested by GREENGUARD Environmental Institute (GEI) - an industry-independent, non-profit organization that oversees the GREENGUARD Certification Program for low-emitting products and materials. These products are certified, and are regularly tested to ensure that their chemical and particle emissions meet acceptable IAQ (indoor air quality) pollutant guidelines and standards.

As well, each furniture product includes a detailed list of materials used to construct the product, the percentage of recycled content contained (including the breakdown between post-industrial and post-consumer), and also includes the percentage of the product that is recyclable at the end of the products' life-cycle in order to divert as much material from landfill as possible.
