Queen's withdraws noise by-law exemption application
from council agenda

March 6, 2014

The university has withdrawn its application for a noise by-law exemption for two West Campus fields, pending further consultation on the matter. The application also included exemption requests related to amplified noise and nearby Richardson Stadium.

Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic) Alan Harrison requested the withdrawal in a letter to City Council.

Although a report from city staff recommends the application be granted, the university plans to further consider feedback on the application in order to strike a balance between the concerns of local residents and the needs of student and community groups that use the fields. The West Campus fields have been used as an athletics and recreation complex for more than 40 years.

“The university modified its original application based on comments from local residents, but we want to ensure that we are being as responsive as possible to the concerns of community members, as well as the needs of our user groups,” says Provost Harrison.

The university has already undertaken considerable consultation with residents, user groups, and city staff on this matter.
