Graduate Studies in PsychologyDepartment Policies on Part-time Status

(Approved by Department November 2007)

Printable PDF version

Students are admitted to graduate programs on a full-time basis for the duration of their time here. Part-time status is not a normal state of affairs - Regulation 7.3 Transfers from Full-time to Part-time Status,“In general, students registered in full-time programs are expected to maintain full-time status throughout their programs.”

Applications for transfer from full-time to part-time status are considered by the Department and a recommendation is then sent to the School of Graduate Studies for final decision. The Calendar of the School of Graduate Studies lists circumstances under which a change to part-time status may be approved. The School of Graduate Studies conditions for such transfers are very specific and have been strictly adhered to so students should ensure that they will meet at least one of these conditions. Normally, a necessary but not sufficient condition, for the Department of Psychology is that a transfer from full-time status to part-time status will only be recommended after the thesis has been submitted for defense. Normally, part-time status will be supported for a maximum of one year.

Note: Transferring to part-time status may involve financial implications other than reduction of tuition including loss of income from grants, fellowships, scholarships, etc and/or changes in the deferred and/or interest free status of student loans. It is the responsibility of the student to be aware of all financial implications of the change to part-time status.
