After graduating from the University of Western Ontario in 1982 with an honours degree in music education, Don Dawson moved to Kingston where he began his teaching career in both the elementary and secondary panels. Among his many performance experiences, he has performed with the Kingston Symphony as a violist and with local jazz ensembles as a percussionist.
Don has been actively involved with several provincial arts and education organizations, including Ontario Federation of Symphony Orchestras - Youth Orchestra Division (OFSO). He has also had a long successful association with the Ontario Education Leadership Centre (OELC), where he was a staff member for many years, co-developer of OELC Elementary Fine Arts, and developer and manager of OELC Secondary Fine Arts
An award-winning educator with 25 years teaching experience, Don's latest educational journey was launched in 2000 when he co-developed the School Board's highly regarded Limestone Education through the Arts Program (LEAP). In recent years, Don has been exploring the new directions of alternative string ensemble music, which include jazz, rock and fiddle music. This new found passion is his inspiration for the creation of the Stringtown Orchestra.
