Matariki

First Scholarly Workshop:

Renewable Energy and Society

November 5-7, 2010, Queen’s University has the pleasure of hosting the first in a series of Workshops including members of the Matariki Network of Universities.

Each of the 7 Matariki institutions is invited to identify and send up to four delegates from among its faculty researching renewable energy. In order to ensure a balance of disciplinary approaches, institutions are encouraged to send a delegation with balanced representation from natural sciences or engineering and from the humanities or social sciences.

In addition to the faculty contingent, the institutions are also invited to send up to four students, ideally two undergraduates and two post-graduates, as delegates. Student participation will complement the Matariki Network focus on the synergy between research and teaching – articulated as “research-led teaching”.

Workshop Goals:

To bring academics from different disciplines at all 7 partner institutions together for two days to discuss the unique approaches that different countries are taking to developing and implementing renewable energy options, and to explore the role of citizenry, from local communities to national societies, in this process;

To generate new thinking and explore opportunities for continued research collaboration among the participants;

To build awareness of the new Network and its commitment to the mutual improvement of its membership and its commitment to providing informed discussion of major human problems;

To consider ways in which research and teaching on issues of renewable energy and society can be linked, consistent with the Network’s focus on “Research-led Teaching.”
