12-Week English for Academic Purposes, Canadian English Experience (Summer), or  Canadian English Experience (Winter)

1.   What is the program schedule?

The 12-week EAP program consists of 25 hours of in-class instruction. Classes run Monday to Thursday and range from 8:30 am to 3:50 pm. Classes on Fridays run from 8:30 am to 11:20 am.

Winter and Summer sessions of the Canadian English Experience program consist of 18 hours of in-class instruction. In addition, students take part in 2 hours of guided outings.

Socio-cultural activities are available during the evenings and on weekends.

2.   How long should I study?

Your length of study depends on your specific goals. The majority of our students are learning English for academic purposes and are preparing for their studies in a Canadian university.

The 12-week English for Academic Purposes program consists of 6 levels. Each level is a prerequisite of the next level; therefore, the number of sessions you need to complete will depend on what level you started in.

3.   Is there any benefit in taking the Canadian English Experience program prior to the 12-week EAP?

Some students will choose to enroll in the Canadian English Experience program prior to studying the 12-week EAP program to help get acclimatized to being at Queen’s and in Kingston.

4.   How do I know what level I will be in?

Queen’s School of English provides a thorough test before the first day of classes, and it will determine your placement for the appropriate level. To remain in the program, you must obtain an average of at least 50 percent. In order to advance to the next level, you must receive a certificate in the previous level. A final mark of 65 per cent and no failed classes will earn you a certificate.

5.   I really want a program that will improve my oral/aural skills: Is this program right for me?

Absolutely. Our intensive programs are based on student immersion and development of the integration of reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in a communicative and professional context. Individually and in groups, students will demonstrate an increasing control of the grammatical structures of English both orally and in writing.

6.   I already know my English level, do I still need to be tested?

Students should be aware that program levels may not be consistent with other countries or institutions within Canada. All institutions have their own curriculum and marking/level standards. For example, if you completed an Intermediate level at an institution in Vancouver, you may place at an Elementary level or an Advanced level at Queen's University.
