Students in our 12-week EAP program participate in a student-centered immersion program, which integrates the four language skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. In addition to the intensive study of these four language components, this program puts particular emphasis on developing the following academic skills:
When students arrive at Queen's they are given a placement test and placed into one of the following six levels:
Each level lasts for one 12-week session. Upon successful completion of a level, students can advance to the next consecutive level. Levels 110 to 130 are designed as foundations to English for Academic Purposes (EAP), and levels 132-150 are intensive English for Academic Purposes (EAP).
(All levels) Students participate in activities designed to help them develop all four language skills and use them in a communicative context. A focus of the core class is the acquisition of reading skills using level-adapted materials and/or authentic reading materials, and the expansion of vocabulary. Weekly writing assignments move from sentence and paragraph development in the lower levels to the successful production of academic essays at the upper levels. Individually and in groups, students will demonstrate an increasing control of the grammatical structures of English both orally and in writing.
15 hours per week
(All levels) Students in all levels attend a listening laboratory class which focuses on the development of listening and pronunciation skills through adapted and authentic materials.
3 hours per week
(Levels 110 - 130) This class is delivered to levels 110, 120 and 130. The focus of this class is on the student's use of spoken English. Students are introduced to the fundamentals of pronunciation and the elements of conversation. Students practice spoken English in a variety of contexts including short dialogues, role-play and activities.
3 hours per week
(Levels 132 - 150) These classes are delivered to levels 132, 140 and 150. Students learn and practice the skills involved in public speaking and presentation. In 132 the focus is on engaging the audience using tone, intonation and pacing to create a dramatic or humorous effect. In 140 the focus is on making effective, organized academic presentations using reported speech, signposting and visual/auditory aids. In 150 the focus is on using persuasive language to engage in stimulating debate and effective seminar leadership.
3 hours per week
(Levels 110 - 130) These classes are delivered to levels 110, 120 and 130. The discussion class facilitator is a supervised Queen's undergraduate student who works with QSoE students to help them develop oral fluency and become adept at using discussion techniques.
1.5 hours per week
(Levels 132 - 150) This online course for EAP levels 132 to 150 is designed to assist students in the development of strategies and skills that will improve their study of English and increase their independence as language learners. Students engage with and draw upon a variety of study tools and university resources. They participate in activities where new vocabulary and practical approaches to studying English as an additional language in a university setting are explained and explored. Topics include editing, word processing, note-taking, reading methods for comprehension and research, increasing academic vocabulary, and essay writing strategies. This interactive course is instructor-monitored and employs a blended learning format, with two to three in-class workshops held during each session. Students are expected to complete a minimum of ten tasks, chosen from a variety of topics and levels and participate weekly in the online forums.
1.5 hours per week
