Experience English language learning with enthusiastic instructors during one of the best seasons of the year - summer! Guided excursions to areas of local interest and a full slate of social events and activities will ensure that the classmates you meet from around the world will become your life-long friends.

The 4-week English Language & Culture program is offered in August. The theme, Kingston Past & Present, will carry through the school trips and guided excursions.

In our summer session you will participate in a student-centered immersion program, which integrates the four language skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking, using Canadian cultural and social content. This program puts particular focus on developing communicative competence in speaking and listening.

Requirements:

  • You should have a basic understanding of English
  • You must be at least 18 years of age
  • When you arrive at Queen's you will be given a placement test and given instruction appropriate to your level of language proficiency

Program Outline

Core Class

Participate in activities designed to help you develop all four language skills and use them in a communicative context. Engage in interactive role-play, pair and group discussions and activities and oral presentation. Expand your ability to read and write in English. Canadian culture is used as a theme throughout the courses.
15 hours per week

Language Lab and Pronunciation

Attend a listening laboratory class each week, which focuses on the development of pronunciation and listening skills.
3 hours per week

Guided Excursions

A socio-cultural monitor will escort each class to a different Kingston venue/attraction every week. These venues will be tied to the curricular theme.
2 hours per week

Activities

Participate in a variety of language intensive socio-cultural activities to help you enjoy Canadian culture while practicing your listening and speaking skills.
