The adolescent love of gadgets long ago merged seamlessly with the dominant vocationalism of present-day higher education. Edward Snowden differs from what has become a common pattern only by not having been to university at all. When the Ivy League-educated President Obama contemptuously dismissed him as a hacker, he missed an opportunity to point out the huge gap between technical sophistication and knowledge of the world, let alone the ability to think about it critically, that characterizes bright young people like Snowden.
CHRISTOPHER CLAUSEN writes frequently about the United States and has been concerned with civil liberties issues since his student days. He is the author of Faded Mosaic: The Emergence of Post-Cultural America and other books.
