21 Lessions for the 21st Century
by Yuval Noah Harari (Signal 2018)

The book 21 Lessons for the 21st Century is not so much a conclusion to a series as a pause to reflect on the issues raised by Sapiens and Homo Deus. In all of these lucid, superbly written books, Harari says that his role is not to provide answers but to formulate ways for thinking about crucial developments such as artificial intelligence, information and biological technologies, as well as the pressing decisions facing humanity because of these radical changes. Many of the concerns that are the subjects of the 21 lessons, he notes, are further developments of questions raised by his readers. As he states, 21 Lessons is organized as a selection of topics rather than as a narrative. The lessons often review points from the earlier books and provide fresh perspectives on various troubling perplexities.

THOMAS GERRY is the author of The Emblems of James Reaney. He is currently editing several books and helping to organize the June 2019 Symposium on the Greeks in Paros, Greece.
