LOUISE CARSON

Earlier

the dog and I edged around
the freshly crushed remains
of a mourning dove     oh no     I thought
I heard they mate for life
someone is lonely
three on those wires where four had been.
Crows appeared on the road.

Next day a mob of mourning doves assembles
on the lawn on the wires
near where the one was killed
a funeral I guess and the day after that
there are four doves again
a funeral
followed by a wedding.
