LEE MARSHALL

A World Apart

Roma, the long-awaited film from auteur Alfonso CuarĂ³n (Gravity, Children of Men), is part Romantic, part Neorealist poetry. The Netflix feature nabbed ten Academy Award nominations including best picture - a first for the streaming service - and ultimately won best director, best cinematography, and best foreign language film at the Oscars this February. Intimate and deliberate, the black-and-white historical family drama is a portal to Mexico in 1970, yet it portrays social inequity that still permeates today.

LEE MARSHALL is film reviewer for Queen's Quarterly.
