Queen's believes that all students who are offered admission should have the opportunity to attend and
remain at Queen's, regardless of their personal financial
circumstances. All Queen's students share the ability to excel academically; however not all of them have the same ability to fully finance their university education. Queen's University is committed to equality of opportunity and therefore we assist students whose families are lacking sufficient financial resources. Our committment to financial need-based assistance has been very
influential in increasing the diversity of Queen's student
body and it has enabled students from all across the country
to participate in Queen's residential experience.
Admission bursaries/awards and work
programs are directed to students based on demonstrated
financial need. At the undergraduate level, most of Queen's
student assistance is need-based vs. merit-based.
A need-based bursary combined with academic
achievement is called an award. Some of our major admission awards (such as the Chernoff Family Award, Bank of Montreal
Award or Dr. Iris May Marsh Award, and Melvin R. Goodes Entrance Award) also include criteria
such as superior academics, creative thinking, involvement
in school or community activities and proven leadership qualities.
(Apply for admission to Queen's through the Ontario Universities' Application Centre (OUAC) prior tothe Major Admission Awards application deadline of 01 December 2009. Applications for a Major AdmissionAward from applicants who are unable to apply for admission to Queen's by December 1st will be accepted ifreceived by the Major Admission Award application deadline).
Students who demonstrate
superior academic ability, creative and original thinking,
involvement in school or community activities, and proven
leadership qualities can apply for a major admission award.
Financial need is also a consideration for some of our major
admission awards.
The six Queen's major admission awards are:
- *Chernoff Family Award
(Financial need)
- *Dr. Irish May Marsh Memorial Award
(Financial Need)
- *Bank of Montreal Award
(Financial Need)
- *Melvin R. Goodes Entrance Award (Financial Need)
- Chancellor's Scholarship
- D&R Sobey Atlantic Scholarship
* Financial Information: must be submitted if applying for a Chernoff Family Award, Dr. Iris May Marsh Memorial Award, Bank of Montreal Award and/or the Melvin R. Goodes Award. Financial information is to be submitted on the Admission Bursary application. The online Admission Bursary application is available on the Student Awards web site. (You must have your OUAC Reference Number to access the on-line application). Admission Bursary application must be submitted by December 1st to be considered for these awards.
An
Admission Bursary is a non-repayable grant disbursed to students entering university in an undergraduate degree program for the first time, who demonstrate financial need. Admission Bursaries and Awards range in value up to $7,000. Typically students applying for an admission bursary will also be considering government assistance. Government assistance applications will be available on the provincial/territorial web sites in April/May of the year you are planning on entering university.
At Queen's, our admission bursary deadline is early because we want you to be informed of any Queen's financial assistance at the same time you are offered admission. This means we ask students to submit their admission bursary application early...often before you have been offered admission.
Note:
In order to submit an Admission Bursary application you must have your OUAC reference number, which is provided to you when you apply for admission to Queen's through the Ontario Universities' Application Centre.
To be eligible:
- Citizen or permanent resident of Canada
- Demonstrated financial need based on, but not restricted to, the following factors: student and family income, number of dependants in the family, applicant's assets - including savings, anticipated resources through either government student assistance or student line of credit, and the full cost of the program of studies, books and supplies and basic living expenses.
- Entering post-secondary studies for the first time
- Entering the first year of full-time studies in an undergraduate
degree program at Queen's in September 2010 or be participating
in the Queen's First-Year Program at the Bader International

Process
of notification of eligibility:
- Most students receiving an admission bursary/award
will be notified with their offer of admission.
- Entering students may indicate on their admission bursary
application if they wish to be considered for the Queen's Work
Study Program. We will advise you of your
eligibility at the time you are offered admission.
- Each year you study at Queen's you may apply for a Queen's General Bursary, which is based on financial need. The application deadline is October 31.
Note: All admission
bursaries/awards require an application.
