- Law Admission Bursaries are non-repayable grants. Financial need is the primary consideration in the selection of bursary recipients.
- Applicants must be entering full-time studies in the first year of an undergraduate law degree program at Queen’s University in September 2010.
- Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents.
- Financial need is based on student, and parent/partner (if applicable) income, the number of dependants in the family (if applicable), and the applicant’s assets, including savings.
- Completed applications must be received by the Student Awards Office by the deadlines referenced above
- Only successful applicants will be notified. We will make every effort to ensure that those applicants who submit their admission bursary application by the Early Deadline of December 1, 2009, receive their bursary offer at the time they are offered admission to the Faculty of Law.
Miller Thomson LLP National Entrance Scholarship
Established in February 2004 by Miller Thomson LLP and awarded on the basis of academic achievement, financial need and involvement in extracurricular and community activities to a student entering the first year of studies in the Faculty of Law. Selection will be made by the Associate University Registrar (Student Awards) in consultation with the Assistant Dean of Students of the Faculty of Law. Waterloo Law Association Entrance Award
Established in October 2005 by the Waterloo Law Association and awarded on the basis of academic excellence, financial need, and a record of community service to students entering the J.D. program in the Faculty of Law. Preference will be given to students who, at the time of admission to Queen's University, were residents of the Kitchener, Waterloo Cambridge region.

Students may apply for the following awards by completing the Queen's University General Bursary Application available online on the Student Awards webpage. The deadline for this application is 31 October. Funds will be distributed at the beginning of the Winter Term.
Gordon and Kathryn Baker Bursary
Established by Gordon R. Baker, QC, LL.B. 1970 and Kathryn Baker, B.Ed. 1969 and awarded to students in the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need.
Andrea Battersby and Karim Ali Radwan Memorial Bursary
Established in October 2002 by family and friends in memory of Andrea Battersby, B.A. 1999, LL.B. 2001, and her son, Karim Ali Radwan, and awarded on the basis of financial need to female students in the Faculty of Law who are single parents. Preference will be given to students whose child is physically or developmentally challenged.
Dennis Cole Memorial Bursary
Established by friends and family in memory of Dennis Cole, B.A. 1959, LL.B. 1962, and awarded on the basis of financial need to a student in the first year of the Juris Doctor program.
Criminal Lawyers' Association Award
Established in December 2008 by the Criminal Lawyers’ Association and awarded to a student in the third year of the Faculty of Law on the basis of demonstrated financial need, academic achievement, and interest in criminal law.
Faculty of Law Bursary
Established from donations and awarded to a student in the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need.
David Farrell Law '64 Bursary
Established and funded by the class of Law '64, this award is made annually to a second or third year law student, on the basis of overall scholarship, financial need and contribution to the Faculty, the University and the wider community. Applicants should submit a bursary application along with a letter outlining the above to the Associate University Registrar (Student Awards) by 31 October.
Harold G. Fox Education Fund
A sum of money is available for distribution each year to law students as bursary assistance, and is awarded on the basis of need. The money is distributed by the fund established in memory of the late Harold G. Fox, Q.C., a member of the Bar of Ontario.
Rebecca Gotlieb Memorial Award
Established in April 2004 by Allan Gotlieb in memory of his daughter, Rebecca Gotlieb, B.A. '80, LL.B. '83, and awarded on the basis of financial need and academic achievement to a student in the Faculty of Law enrolled in the four-year MPA/J.D. Co-operative Combined Degree Program offered by the School of Policy Studies and the Faculty of Law at Queens University. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate an interest in health law and policy. Selection will be made in consultation with the Manager of Records and Registration of the Faculty of Law. Applicants should submit a bursary application along with a letter outlining the above to the Associate University Registrar (Student Awards) by 31 October.
Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP Bursary
Established by Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP, and awarded to students in any year in the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need.
Roy Heenan Award in Industrial Relations
Established in October 2005 by the Industrial Relations Centre in honour of Roy Heenan to recognize the contributions he has made for many years by volunteering his time to the Centre. Awarded on the basis of financial need and academic achievement to full-time first year student(s) in the MIR/J.D. Co-operative Combined Degree program in Industrial Relations.
Law '65 Bursary
Established by the class of Law '65 and awarded on the basis of financial need to a student in any year of the Faculty of Law who is a resident of Ontario.
Law '76 Bursary
Established by the class of Law '76 and awarded on the basis of financial need to a student in any year of the Faculty of Law who is a resident of Ontario.
Law '77 Award
Established in December 2003 by members of the Class of Law '77 and awarded on the basis of financial need and academic achievement to a student in the first or second year of studies in the Faculty of Law. Students must also demonstrate involvement in student activities, contribution to the Faculty, University and/or the wider community
Law '97 Bursary
Established by members of the class of Law 1997 and awarded on the basis of financial need to students in any year of the Faculty of Law who demonstrate participation in extra-curricular activities such as, but not limited to, intramurals, Law Revue and Law Games.
Law Society Foundation Bursary Fund
A sum of money is available for distribution each year to law students as bursary assistance, and is awarded on the basis of need. The money is contributed by members of the Law Society of Upper Canada to assist law students in the Province of Ontario.
Law Students' Society Community Bursary
Established by the Law Students' Society and awarded to a law student(s) on the basis of financial need who has demonstrated a contribution to the law school, university, or wider community and/or overcome obstacles and disadvantage in pursuing a legal education. Applicants should submit a bursary application along with a letter outlining the above to the Associate University Registrar (Student Awards) by 31 October.
Law ThankQ Bursary
Established in October 2005 by the Class of Law 2003 with additional contributions from the Class of Law 2004 and 2005 and awarded on the basis of financial need to a student in any year of studies in the Faculty of Law.
Mitchell Bursary
Established in September 2007 from the estate of Eileen Mitchell Thomas, QC, B.A. 1937, and awarded on the basis of financial need to a student in the Faculty of Law. Preference will be given to a female student. Preference will be given to a student whose address on admission to Queen’s University was Northern Ontario (including the City of Ottawa).
Mary Alice Murray Memorial Bursary
The Mary Alice Murray Memorial Bursary Fund was established by friends, associates and Queen's Law School alumni, to honour Miss Mary Alice Murray (Law '60). The fund provides a sum of money for annual distribution to J.D. students, to be awarded based upon an assessment of financial need.
Nathens Siegel Award
Established in October 2002 by Brahm Siegel, LL.B. '93, and awarded on the basis of financial need and academic achievement to a student from the Province of Quebec. Preference will be given to a student in first year in the Faculty of Law.
Alf Peneycad Bursary
Established in April 2006 to honour Alf Peneycad, Law 1970, named the National Post – ZSA 2005 Canadian General Counsel of the Year, and awarded on the basis of financial need to full-time second or third year students enrolled in the Faculty of Law.
Plumley Family Award in Law
Established by Kent Plumley, B.Sc. (Chem. Eng.) 1960, LL.B. 1963, and Sandra (Macdonald) Plumley, B.A. 1966, and awarded on the basis of financial need to a student in any year of the Faculty of Law.
Denny Hutner Pollock Bursary
Established in March 1995 by Denny Hutner Pollock, LL.B. 1995, and awarded on the basis of financial need to a student enrolled in any year of the Faculty of Law who is a sole support parent of at least one child under the age of thirteen.
Queen's Law Alumni Bursary
Established by the Faculty of Law from donations by alumni, law firms and corporations, and awarded on the basis of financial need to students registered in any year in the Faculty of Law.
Res Ipsa Loquitur Bursary
Established in October 2002 by Professor Jim MacIntyre, a Queen's faculty member from 1959 to 1964, to honour the remembrance of the Res Ipsa Loquitur Boardinghouse which played a significant role in the lives of many law students and faculty members during the 1960's. Awarded on the basis of financial need to students in any year of the Faculty of Law.
David Warren Rutherford Bursary
Established by the family of the late David Warren Rutherford (Law '81), awarded annually to a third year law student on the basis of academic standing and financial need.
Samuel Springer Scholarship
Awards are made annually to a second year law student of high academic standing, who is a resident of Canada and who has shown financial need.
Torys Public Interest Summer Internship Awards
Established in September 2007 by Torys and granted to first-year students in the Faculty of Law to complete unpaid public interest internships in Canada or abroad during the summer following the students’ first year of studies. The award will be granted on the basis of the merit of the award proposal and the demonstrated benefits to the student and the agency. The student’s academic record and any previous experience working in the public interest sector may also be taken into consideration. Students apply to the Assistant Dean of Administration and Finance of the Faculty of Law in April. Details regarding the application procedures are available at the Faculty of Law. Selection will be made by the Administrative Committee of the Faculty of Law in consultation with Torys.
Douglas Traill Memorial Bursary
Established by the class of Law '76 in memory of the late Douglas Melvin Traill, B.A. '73 (UBC), LL.B. '76, awarded on the basis of financial need.
H. Reginald Watson Award
Established in October 2005 by the founding members of V-CC, a Research and Development company, in honour of H. Reginald Watson, LL.B 1981. Awarded to a student in the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need and demonstrated interest and commitment to community service.

Debt Repayment Assistance Program (D-RAP) Application for First Year Funding
The Debt Repayment Assistance Program (“D-RAP”), developed as a collaborative initiative among all of the Ontario law schools, is funded by the Law Foundation of Ontario. The purpose of the D-RAP is to provide recent law school graduates with enhanced access to legal careers in public interest law through debt repayment assistance. D-RAP funding will be awarded to a student that has completed his / her final year at Queen’s Faculty of Law and who demonstrates eligibility on the basis of the following criteria: (1) significant educational debt incurred to pursue legal education including government student loans and loans granted under needs-based financial aid programs at law schools; (2) legal or law-related employment obtained in an organization that serves the public interest in Ontario; (3) total annual compensation generally in the range of $40,000 per year or less; and (4) a demonstrated commitment to serving the public interest. A D-RAP application form, along with supporting documentation, must be submitted to the Student Awards Office by May 31.

Alberta Scholar at Queen’s Law Scholarship
Established in September 2006 by alumni and friends from Alberta and awarded on the basis of academic excellence to a student entering the first year of Queen’s Law (J.D.) or joint J.D.. program, whose address on admission to Queen’s University is from the province of Alberta.
Beresford-Knox Scholarship in Law
Established by Jane Knox, Professor, Department of Psychology, and Harvey Beresford, B.A. '64, LL.B. '67, in celebration of their marriage in July 2000. Awarded on the basis of academic merit to a student entering the first year of the Law program with an Honours degree in Psychology. These scholarships are awarded during the admissions process each year. All students applying for admission to Queen's Faculty of Law each year are automatically considered. No separate application is required.
Blake, Cassels and Graydon LLP Scholarships
Funded by the law firm of Blake, Cassels and Graydon LLP, entrance scholarships for law are awarded annually to students of high academic standing for academic excellence shown prior to entry into law school. Financial need is a secondary consideration, taken into account only where academic records are substantially similar. These scholarships are awarded during the admissions process each year. All students applying for admission to Queen's Faculty of Law each year are automatically considered. No separate application is required.
William M. Bone Scholarship
Established in November 2008 by an anonymous donor in honour of William M. Bone, LLB 1974. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to full-time students entering the first year of the J.D. Program in the Faculty of Law. Selection will be made by the Dean of Law in consultation with the Chair of the Admissions Committee and the Assistant Dean of Students.
Faculty of Law Dean's Council Diversity Awards
Established in November 2003 by the Faculty of Law Dean's Council. Three awards will be available annually to students in any year of studies in the Faculty of Law whose past experience enables them to bring a greater diversity to the complement of students in the Faculty of Law and ultimately to the practice of law. Students must demonstrate a substantial contribution to diversity related issues either in law school or prior to attending law school. Letters of application should be submitted to the Assistant Dean of Students of the Faculty of Law or through the personal statement form in the admissions package by 30 September.

Established by the Faculty of Law and awarded on the basis of academic merit to students entering the first year of the Juris Doctor program. Allan Findlay Memorial Entrance Scholarship
Established by the partners of the late Allan Findlay, Q.C., this scholarship is awarded to a first year law student every three years, on a rotational basis with two other Ontario law schools. Applications will be assessed on the basis of undergraduate academic record and participation in extracurricular affairs, including athletics, debating, student government, drama and the student newspaper. Students are invited to submit applications for this scholarship to the Registrar of the Faculty of Law by 30 September of each appropriate year. As part of the application, students should arrange to have three confidential letters of reference, at least two from persons who have taught the applicant in university classes, sent directly to the Assistant Dean of Students of the Faculty of Law.
David Mullan Entrance Scholarship
Established in April 2007 through gifts made to Queen’s University, Faculty of Law by alumni and friends in celebration of its 50th anniversary and awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students entering the first year of the J.D. program. The scholarship will be renewed in second and third year law if the student maintains a full course load and attains an average within the top 20% of the class in the previous academic year. All students applying for admission to Queen’s Faculty of Law J.D. program are automatically considered. No separate application is required. Selection will be made by the Dean of Law in consultation with the Chair of the Admissions Committee and the Assistant Dean of Students.
Newton Rowell Entrance Scholarships in Law
Established by the Honourable Henry N.R. Jackman, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario in honour of his grandfather, Newton Wesley Rowell. Three entrance scholarships to be awarded annually to students entering the first year of the Juris Doctor program on the basis of academic excellence and a demonstrated interest in, and commitment to, public service. Applications are encouraged from students outside Ontario and from aboriginal peoples and members of racial minorities. Application should be made to the Assistant Deao of Students of the Faculty of Law prior to 30 September.
David and Pearl Tobias Entrance Scholarship
Established by Mr. Norman C. Tobias, a Toronto tax lawyer and associate professor, Faculty of Law, Queen's University, in honour of his parents, David and Pearl Tobias. Awarded to a first year law student each year whose undergraduate record (without taking into account LSAT scores) reflects outstanding achievement in academics, extra-curricular activities, leadership and character, as determined by the Faculty of Law. Application should be made to the Assistant Dean of Students of the Faculty of Law prior to 30 September.
University Entrance Scholarships
Established by Queen's University and the Faculty of Law and awarded on the basis of academic merit to students entering the first year of the Bachelor of Laws program. These scholarships are awarded during the admissions process each year. All students applying for admission to Queen's Faculty of Law each year are automatically considered. No separate application is required.

Aird and Berlis LLP Award for Overall Academic Achievement
Established by Aird & Berlis LLP and awarded on the basis of academic excellence to full-time students who have completed the first year of studies in the Faculty of Law.
C. Thomas Asplund Memorial Award in Legal Ethics
Established by colleagues, students and friends in memory of the late C. Thomas Asplund who taught in the Faculty of Law from 1968 to 1990, and awarded annually to a second or third year student for outstanding work in the area of legal ethics.
Baker and McKenzie Award
The Baker and McKenzie Award in labour law is presented and funded by the Baker and McKenzie Foundation. It is awarded annually to a student in second or third year law who submits a course paper in labour law which is judged to be the best paper by a student in that subject area. Papers should be submitted to the Assistant Dean of Students of the Faculty of Law by 31 May.
Baker & MacKenzie Labour and Employment Law Scholarship
Established by the law firm of Baker & MacKenzie and awarded annually to a student completing the first year of the M.I.R./J.D. degree program on the basis of outstanding academic performance.
Bayne Sellar Boxall Award
Funded by the law firm of Bayne Sellar Boxall and awarded annually to the graduating student with the best overall performance in criminal law courses.
Beard Winter Advocacy Prize
Established in September 2006 by the law firm Beard Winter LLP under the leadership of John Olah of Beard Winter LLP, and awarded to a second or third year student on the basis of outstanding achievement in Trial Advocacy in the Faculty of Law.
Bereskin and Parr Prize in Copyright Law
Funded by the law firm of Bereskin and Parr, and awarded annually to the student with the highest ranking in Copyright Law.
Bereskin and Parr Prize in Patent Law
Funded by the law firm of Bereskin and Parr, and awarded annually to the student with the highest ranking in Patent Law.
Bereskin and Parr Prize in Trademarks and Unfair Competition
Funded by the law firm of Bereskin and Parr, and awarded annually to the student with the highest ranking in Trademarks and Unfair Competition.
Blake, Cassels and Graydon LLP Prize in Business Associations
A prize is awarded annually by the law firm of Blake, Cassels and Graydon LLP to the student achieving the highest standing in Business Associations.
Blakes Scholar Award
Established by the law firm of Blake, Cassels and Graydon LLP and awarded on the basis of academic excellence to a student entering the second year of the law program. Additional selection criteria may be taken into consideration. If the recipient maintains excellent academic standing in the second year of the program, the scholarship may be renewed. Selection will be made by the Dean of the Faculty of Law.
Borden Ladner Gervais Professional Excellence Award
Established in April 2007 by Borden Ladner Gervais LLP and awarded on the basis of outstanding academic achievement and commitment to professional excellence as demonstrated by community service and teamwork to a student entering the second year in the Faculty of Law. Students in first year of studies submit their letter of application, along with one letter of reference, to the Assistant Dean of Students of the Faculty of Law by 1 April.
Canada Law Book Company Book Prize in Conflicts
The Canada Law Book Company awards a prize annually to the student who obtains the highest standing in Conflicts. Preference may be given to a student who has received no other prize.
Canada Law Book Company Book Prize in International Law
The Canada Law Book Company awards a prize annually to the student who obtains the highest standing in International Law. Preference may be given to a student who has received no other prize.
Canada Law Book Company Book Prize in Torts
The Canada Law Book Company awards a prize annually to the student who obtains the highest standing in Torts. Preference may be given to a student who has received no other prize.
Senator Frank Carrel Scholarships
Established at Queen’s University through the generosity of the late Senator Frank Carrel, noted publisher, executive and author who represented the Gulf Division in the Legislative Council of the Province of Quebec for many years prior to his death in 1940. Candidates for Carrel Scholarships must for at least one year prior to their application for admission to Queen’s University (or for at least one year prior to 30 April if enrolled in an upper year) have been and remain until the expiry of their scholarship domiciled in the Province of Quebec and as far as possible in the City or County of Quebec or in the Gulf Region of the Legislative Council of Quebec as constituted at 30 July, 1940 (including Rimouski, Bonaventure, Gaspe-est, Gaspe-ouest and Iles de la Madeleine). Several scholarships are awarded annually for general proficiency in the work of the previous year. All eligible candidates will be considered automatically.
Cassels Brock and Blackwell Insolvency Prize
Established in May 2005 by Cassels Brock & Blackwell LLP to honour E. Bruce Leonard, a partner at Cassels Brock & Blackwell LLP and Founder of The Insolvency Institute of Canada and The International Insolvency Institute, and awarded on the basis of academic excellence to an upper year student in the Faculty of Law who has demonstrated academic excellence in the subject area of bankruptcy and insolvency.
Cassels Brock and Blackwell LLP Centennial Award in Constitutional Law and Human Rights
Funded by the law firm of Cassels Brock and Blackwell LLP, to celebrate its centennial anniversary in 1988, and awarded annually on the recommendation of the Faculty of Law to the third year law student who best combines achievement in courses in the constitutional law and human rights areas. Students should apply by letter to the Assistant Dean of Students of the Faculty of Law by 1 April.
Cassels Brock and Blackwell LLP Centennial Award in Practice Skills
Funded by the law firm of Cassels Brock and Blackwell LLP to celebrate its centennial anniversary in 1988, and awarded annually on the recommendation of the Faculty of Law to the third year law student who best combines achievement in practice skills courses (including the Legal Aid academic credit), in competitive moots and other practice skills competitions. Students should apply by letter to the Assistant Dean of Students of the Faculty of Law by 1 April.
Community Commitment Award
Established in January 2001 from funds from the Law Foundation of Ontario special endowment to the Faculty of Law at Queen's, to up to eight (8) graduating students each year who have demonstrated interest in and commitment to public or community service. Preference will be given to those students who upon graduation will be engaged in public interest or community service legal work with a projected yearly salary of less than $30,000, and who will not receive tuition or salary payments for completing the Bar Admission Course. Consideration will also be given to students who upon graduation will be articling with a firm or organization with a projected yearly salary of less than $30,000 and who will not receive tuition or salary payments for completing the Bar Admission Course. Application is made by letter with accompanying resume to the Assistant Dean of Students of the Faculty of Law, and should include corroborating documentation from the employer. Deadline for application is 1 April in the year of graduation.
Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg LLP Prize in Corporations and Taxation
An award is made annually by the law firm of Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg LLP to the students exhibiting the highest proficiency in the areas of Business Associations and Taxation.
Dean's Key
Established in March 2007 by the Faculty of Law in celebration of its 50th anniversary and awarded annually to a maximum of two graduating students who best embody the proud traditions and signature values of Queen's Law: community, collegiality, professionalism, service, exemplary commitment and responsibility towards legal studies, and academic achievement (minimum cumulative B average in the J.B. program). Selection will be made by the Dean, Associate Dean and Assistant Deans of the Faculty of law on the basis of a written nomination from a member of the Queen's Law community, supported by the nominee's resume and a letter of reference. Nominations should be submitted to the Assistant Dean of Students of the Faculty of Law by 1 April.
Environmental Law Award
Established by D. Brad Sloan, a graduate of the class of Law '73, an award is made annually for outstanding achievement in a course in the environmental law area.

Funded by the law firm of Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP, and awarded annually to the student with the highest standing in Civil Procedure.

Funded by the law firm of Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP, and awarded annually to the student with the highest standing in Public Law.

Funded by the law firm of Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP, and awarded annually to the student with the highest standing in Torts.
Fasken Martineau DuMoulin Mooting Award
Established in December 2005 by Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP to provide an award to recognize and honour a Queen’s Law student who has made an outstanding contribution to the Queen’s Law Moot Program. Nominees may have fulfilled various roles in the Moot Program including, but not limited to, competitive moot team member, coach, student member of Moot Court Committee, organizer, or researcher. To be considered, participants, students and professors in the Moot Program may submit the names of nominees to the Moot Program Award Committee by 15 March. Selection will be made by the Moot Program Award Committee.
Feminist Jurisprudence Award
Established by the family and friends of Sharon Cohen, a graduate of Law '88. Awarded annually for outstanding achievement and participation in feminist jurisprudence.
Fraser Milner Casgrain Award
The Fraser Milner Casgrain Award is a gift of that law firm to be awarded annually to a student in second year who submits what is judged to be the best substantial paper during that academic year. Papers should be submitted to the Assistant Dean of Students of the Faculty of Law by 31 May.
Alexandra and Mary Fraser Memorial Scholarship
Established by Donald Fraser, LL.B. '62, in memory of his wife, Mary, and his daughter, Alexandra, and awarded on the basis of academic achievement to a student in the Faculty of Law enrolled in the second year of the four-year joint MIR/J.D. Cooperative Combined Degree Program offered by the School of Industrial Relations and the Faculty of Law at Queen's University. If, in any given year, there is no suitable second-year candidate, the scholarship may be presented to a student in the third or fourth year of the Law component of the Joint MIR/LL.B. Cooperative Degree Program.
Gavel Award
The Gavel Award is given annually by the Queen's Law Students' Society to the third year student who, on the determination of the student body, has contributed most to student affairs during the three years of law school.
Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP Award
Funded by the law firm of Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP, and awarded annually to the second or third year law student with the highest standing in Secured Transactions and Insolvency.
Lang Michener Award
Funded by the law firm of Lang Michener and awarded annually to a student with the highest standing in Contracts.
Law '66 Book Prize
The 1966 Graduating Class in Law has established an annual prize awarded to the student with the highest standing in Contracts and who has received no other prize.
Agnès Lefas Memorial Scholarship
Established in October 2002 by friends and colleagues in memory of Agnès Lefas, LL.B. 1979, and awarded on the basis of academic excellence to a student in the Queen’s Faculty of Law with a demonstrated interest in civil law or the study of international business law in common and civil law jurisdictions, including (a) a student taking a civil law course in any year of their J.D. program at Queen’s Faculty of Law, or (b) a student enrolled at Queen’s Faculty of Law in the Civil Law/Common Law Joint Degree Program, or (c) a student in the LL.M. program at Queen’s Faculty of Law with a study/research focus on areas related to civil law, including private international law. Students should apply by letter to the Assistant Dean of Students of the Faculty of Law by 30 September.
George Norman Leipnik Award in International Legal Studies
Established by the estate of Agnes Lorimer Leipnik in honour of her son, George Norman Leipnik, Arts '70, and awarded annually for outstanding achievement in a course in the area of international legal studies.

Reuben Wells Leonard Prizes
Awards are made annually to second year students exhibiting the greatest degree of proficiency in individual courses, as designated by the Faculty.
C. Douglas MacLeod Memorial Scholarship
The C. Douglas MacLeod Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to a student completing the second year of the J.D. program. The scholarship recipient will be selected based upon general scholastic achievement with particular emphasis on outstanding performance in courses on constitutional and administrative law. Equal consideration shall also be given to the candidates' other contributions to the Faculty of Law and the University such as participation in Faculty and University governance, student government, athletics, other extracurricular activities and participation in community projects both legal and non-legal. The scholarship is awarded in memory of Doug MacLeod who was a scholar, athlete and eclectic participant in all school matters through his years at Queen's, the London School of Economics and as a teacher at Dalhousie University. Doug was also recognized as one of the pre-eminent transportation law counsel in Canada, and was the founding President of the Canadian Transportation Lawyers Association. Students should apply by letter to the Assistant Dean of Students of the Faculty of Law by 30 September.
McCarthy Tétrault Leadership Award
Established in October 2005 by McCarthy Tétrault LLP, and awarded to a student entering second year and to a student entering third year on the basis of strong academic standing and demonstrated initiative and leadership qualities through participation in extra-curricular activities within the law school or in the community. Applications should be submitted to the Assistant Dean of Students in the Faculty of Law by 1 April.
McCarthy Tétrault Prizes
Funded by the law firm of McCarthy Tétrault, two prizes are awarded annually to students in first and second year for outstanding achievement in one or more law courses.
Dr. Stanley Harwood McCuaig Scholarship
Established by the McLean McCuaig Foundation, Vancouver, British Columbia in honour of Stanley Harwood McCuaig, C.M., Q.C., B.A., LL.D. (Queen's), of Edmonton, Alberta. Awards are made annually for high standing in courses in Property Law, Business Associations and Commercial Law.
McDougall-Watson Memorial Awards
Established in 1990 by Queen's Legal Aid in memory of the contributions made by C. William McDougall (Law '77) and David Watson (Law '87) C. William McDougall was a lawyer with Queen's Legal Aid who died in a car accident shortly after his retirement. David Watson was a caseworker with Queen's Legal Aid who died suddenly in 1989. The awards are presented annually to a deserving student in each caseworker group to recognize excellence in file management, commitment to the objectives of Queen's Legal Aid and sheer hard work. In acknowledging the contributions of C. William McDougall and David Watson, the awards recognize and celebrate the spirit of co-operation which exists between the lawyers and caseworkers in Queen's Legal Aid, a spirit which is fundamental to the work and health of the organization.
McMillan LLP Award
Established in October 2002 by McMillan LLP awarded on the basis of academic excellence to a student in second year in the Faculty of Law. Preference will be given to a student who has expressed an interest in business law. Additional selection criteria may be taken into consideration. Application by letter should be made to the Registrar of the Faculty of Law by 1 May.
Chief Justice McRuer Essay Prize in Constitutional Law
The Honourable James C. McRuer established a prize to be awarded annually to the Queen's law student who submits what is judged to be the best major essay in the subject area of Constitutional Law. The essay must have been written for partial or full course credit in connection with any class in the curriculum to which the constitutional subject of the essay is reasonably relevant. Papers should be submitted to the Assistant Dean of Students of the Faculty of Law by 31 May.
P.E. Newbury Prize in Family Law
The estate of Mrs. P.E. Newbury has provided an annual award to a student exhibiting outstanding achievement in Family Law. The award was established by Mrs. P.E. Newbury as a grateful parent, "in recognition of the excellence of Queen's University."
Ogilvy Renault Award
Established by the law firm of Ogilvy Renault and awarded on the basis of academic excellence to a student entering the third year of the law program. Selection will be made by the Dean of the Faculty of Law or delegate.
Ogilvy Renault LLP Scholarship
Established in October 2006 by the law firm of Ogilvy Renault LLP and awarded to a student entering second year in the Faculty of Law, on the basis of academic excellence as well as a demonstrated commitment to teamwork as evidenced by interactions with Faculty and fellow students. Students should apply by letter, along with three letters of reference to the Registrar of the Faculty of Law by 1 April of the student’s first year. At least two letters of reference will attest to the commitment to teamwork demonstrated by the applicant through interactions with Faculty and fellow students. The letters of reference could be from a Faculty member who chaired a joint committee or from a member of the senior administrative staff who has personal knowledge of the contribution by the applicant to a joint Faculty-student initiative or from a member of the core executive of the Law Students’ Society who can attest to the applicant’s commitment to teamwork.
William S. O'Hara Prize in Criminal Law
Mr. L.H. Tepper, Q.C., a Kingston lawyer, has established a prize in memory of a gold medalist of Dalhousie University Faculty of Law, whose brief career as a member of the Kingston Bar showed great promise. It is awarded annually to the student of the first year obtaining the highest standing in Criminal Law.
Osgoode Society Legal History Book Prize
Established by The Osgoode Society and awarded annually for outstanding achievement in work related to legal history.
Vincent Principi Memorial Award in Labour Law
Established in July 2004 by the family of Vincent Principi, and awarded annually to a graduating student for demonstrated skill and proficiency in one or more courses in labour law, coupled with involvement in extra-curricular activities, such as community service or participation in the Queen's Labour Law Students' Society. Students should submit an application to the Assistant Dean of Students in the Faculty of Law by 1 April.
Queen's Criminal Law Association Award
Established by the Queen's Criminal Law Association to honour the contributions made to the field of criminal justice by Professor Don Stuart. Awarded annually to a graduating student who has demonstrated academic ability and keen interest in this field and who has completed three or more courses relating to criminal justice. Consideration will be given for involvement in the Correctional Law Project, Legal Aid or the Mooting Program and preference may be given to a student who does not hold another prize for that academic year. Students should apply by letter to the Assistant Dean of Students of the Faculty of Law by 1 April.
Queen's Law Students' Society Millennium Award
Established by the Queen's Law Students' Society and awarded annually to the second year student who, in the determination of the student body, contributed to and participated in the events and activities that defined the second year class.
K. Venkata Raman Memorial Scholarship in International Economic Law
stablished in September 2009 to honour K. Venkata Raman, professor in the Faculty of Law, with a gift commitment from David Kerzner, (LL.B. '90) and Barry Appleton, (LL.B. '89). Awarded to students in any year of the J.D. program on the basis of academic excellence in a course related to international economic law. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Law.
Robinson-Ryan Awards
Established in 1975 to honour Professors Stuart Ryan and Lyman Robinson, who contributed greatly to Queen's Legal Aid through their time, energy and interest. Awards are made to Caseworkers currently in their final year of law school who, through their continued interest and participation during law school, have most significantly contributed to achievement and development of the goals of the clinic.
Professor H.R.S. Ryan Prize
A book prize established by the 1968 graduating class to honour Professor Ryan of the Faculty of Law. It is awarded to the student with the highest standing in Evidence.
David Sabbath Prizes
Awards are made annually from the J.L. Sabbath Fund to students in each year exhibiting the greatest degree of proficiency in individual courses, as designated by the Faculty.
Sack Goldblatt Mitchell Award in Labour Law, Employment Law and Human Rights
Funded by the firm of Sack Goldblatt Mitchell, and awarded annually to a graduating student with a superior overall performance in labour law, employment law and human rights courses, combined with involvement in activities such as participation in Queen’s Legal Aid or other community service. Performance in independent or group writing courses and supervised study projects will be considered if the topic is substantially related to labour, employment or human rights law. Students should apply by letter to the Assistant Dean of Students of the Faculty of Law by 1 April.
Samworth Advocacy Prize
Established in October 2006 by The Advocates’ Society in honour of its 2002-2003 president, Philippa Samworth, B.A. 1974, LL.B. 1977. Presented to a second or third year student with high academic standing in a Competitive Moot course and in an Advocacy course in the Faculty of Law. The Advocates’ Society will supplement this prize with free tuition to a basic civil or criminal advocacy skills course offered by The Advocates’ Society in various locations around the province, to be taken by the student either during their articling period or in their first year of practice. Taking this course is not a condition of receiving this prize.
Susan J. Serena Scholarship
Established in October 2003 by Susan J. Serena, LL.B. '79, and awarded annually to a student or students completing second year law, on the basis of overall scholarship, involvement in student activities and contribution to the faculty, the university and the wider community. Students should apply by letter to the Manager of Records and Registration of the Faculty of Law by 1 April.
Sherrard Kuzz LLP Prize in Labour Law, Employment Law and Administratiave Law
Established by the firm of Sherrard Kuzz LLP and awarded annually to a second-year student on the basis of academic excellence in at least two, but preferably three, of the following areas of study: labour law, employment law, and administrative law.
Shibley Righton LLP Award
Established by the law firm of Shibley Righton LLP and awarded annually to the second year law student with the highest standing in Evidence.
Dan Soberman Awards
Established in 1994 to honour Professor Dan Soberman, the second Dean of Queen's Faculty of Law, who made a successful application to the Law Society of Upper Canada to create Queen's Legal Aid as a volunteer student organization and who has always been a strong supporter of the clinic. Awards are made to Caseworkers currently in their second year of law school who have demonstrated excellent file work and who have generously given their time to assist other Caseworkers. Certificate

The Spirit Award is given annually by the Queen's Law Students' Society to the third year student who, on the determination of the student body, has best and most contributed to the spirit of the law school.
Stringer, Brisbin, Humphrey Prize in Labour Law
Funded by the law firm of Stringer, Brisbin, Humphrey, and awarded annually to the student with the highest standing in Labour Law.
Torkin Manes LLP Academic Excellence & Community Service Award
Established by the law firm of Torkin Manes LLP and awarded to a third-year student in the Faculty of Law at graduation on the basis of demonstrated academic excellence and proven commitment to community service. Application, including resume, should be made to the Assistant Dean of Students of the Faculty of Law by 1 May.
J.S.D. Tory Writing Awards
The J.S.D. Tory Fund, a memorial fund established in 1975 by Virginia Denton and James and John Tory, the children of the late J.S.D. Tory, is supplemented by an annual gift of the law firm of Torys. This fund provides awards to law students who have demonstrated outstanding research and writing skills and whose work is of publishable or potentially publishable quality. In such a case, the award would be received when this has been satisfactorily done. A student wishing to apply for a J.S.D. Tory Writing Award should submit a copy of the paper to the Assistant Dean of Students of the Faculty of Law by 31 May.
Torys Prize in Business Law
Established in January 2005 by the law firm of Torys LLP, and awarded annually to a student who obtains the highest standing in the Applied Business Law Seminar, or if not offered in a year, an alternative course in Business Law.
John Deakin Buckley Walton Scholarship in Administrative Law
Established in October 2004 by a bequest from the estate of John Deakin Buckley Walton, Arts 1945, and awarded to the second or third year student in the Faculty of Law, who has the highest standing in Administrative Law.
WeirFoulds LLP Award in Remedies
The WeirFoulds LLP Award in Remedies was established by the partners of the law firm of that name in memory of John T. Weir, Q.C. It is awarded annually to the student with the highest standing in Remedies.
