  • Health Insurance

    Graduate and Undergraduate Degree-Seeking Students:

All international students registered at Queen's University and residing in Ontario during their period of study are required to enrol in the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) - participation is mandatory for both the student and their dependants residing in Ontario. UHIP is a basic health insurance plan comparable to the Ontario provincial health plan provided to residents. Only those students who provide proof that they are covered by a comparable plan can waive UHIIP.  See http://www.uhip.ca/exempted.aspx for the current list of comparable plans.

All international students must complete a UHIP application, either in person at the Queen's University International Centre (QUIC), or online at http://quic.queensu.ca  before their registration can begin.

In 2012/2013, the annual fee is: student, $684; student plus one dependant, $1,368; student plus two or more dependants, $2,052. A single premium, if applicable, must be added to the minimum payment required in order to register.

The applicable health coverage premium will be added to your student fee account upon completion of your UHIP application and this amount is also due with your minimum registration payment, which is required to register.  This payment is due before August 1, click on the link for additional information on this payment requirement for  graduate students, and for undergraduate students

Within your first few days on campus, you must come to the Queen's University International Centre (QUIC) to finalize your health insurance for registration.  You will receive a temporary copy of your health coverage that can be used for doctor and hospital visits until your UHIP card arrives to QUIC.  UHIP coverage will begin on the first day of the month in which your university study begins, but can begin as early as the 10th of the month prior to your program start at no additional charge.  If you enrol late, you will pay premiums retroactive to the first day of the month in which your university term begins.  Dependants of a student must also be enrolled in UHIP if they cannot demonstrate they have comparable coverage as noted above.  All new UHIP applications for dependants (spouse/children) must be completed at the Queen's University International Centre (QUIC) within 30 days of arrival in Canada or a $500 late-payment fee will be assessed along with the retroactive payments.

    Exchange Students to Queen's:

All international students registered at Queen's University and residing in Ontario during their period of study are required to enrol in the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) - participation is mandatory for both the student and their dependants while residing in Ontario.

Exchange students must purchase UHIP coverage for the total number of terms that they are attending Queen's University.

For a single student coverage in 2012/2013; 1 term of UHIP is $228, 2 terms is $456, and annual coverage in $684.

All exchange students must complete a UHIP application, either in person at the Queen's University International Centre (QUIC), or online at http://quic.queensu.ca/incoming/uhip-studentpre-registration.asp and submit payment before the registration can begin.

In addition, you may choose to opt into either the undergraduate (AMS) or  graduate (SGPS)  supplementary health and dental plans, that will cover the cost of prescription drugs and emergency health needs outside Ontario or Canada, among other things. There are deadlines and fees for opting into these plans; please see their respective websites for more information:

    Returning Canadians and Landed Immigrants

You are eligible to apply for free provincial health insurance (OHIP) while residing in Ontario if your period of residence in Ontario is longer than six months from your date of entry into Ontario. The Queen's University International Centre (QUIC) has OHIP application forms - which must be submitted in person to the regional Ministry of Health in Kingston after your arrival in Ontario.

OHIP coverage, after application at the OHIP regional office in Kingston, will normally begin 3 months after your arrival date.

WARNING: THE OHIP CARD WILL SHOW AN EXPIRY DATE.

During the 3-month OHIP waiting period, you must have a health insurance plan that will provide adequate protection while you are registered as a Queen's student. You should bring some evidence of insurance coverage, in case of an emergency. If you have no health insurance valid in Ontario during that waiting period, you are required to enrol in the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP); the cost for 3 months' of single coverage is $180
