Named General Bursaries
If you are selected to receive a General Bursary the name of your bursary may be amended to a named general bursary.
- Only the name of your award will change; the value of your General Bursary assistance will not change depending on the name of the award
Eligible students will also be considered for named general bursaries open to students in any faculty or school.

Concurrent Education BFA-BEd Bursary
Established in May 2015 by Robert Burge and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students in the Bachelor of Education year of a Concurrent Education program in the Faculty of Education. First preference will be given to students who have completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree as part of the Concurrent Education program. Second preference will be given to students in the Intermediate-Senior plan, with at least one teaching subject in the Creative Arts in the following order of priority: (i) Visual Arts, (ii) Music (Instrumental or Voice), (iii) Dramatic Arts.
Hugh DeCourcy Memorial Bursary
Established in May 2005 in memory of Hugh DeCourcy, B.A.(Hons.) 1988, B.Ed. 1989, by his father, Peter DeCourcy, and mother, Sharelle Robertson. Awarded on the basis of financial need to a student in the final year (fifth year) of the Concurrent Education program at Queen's University.
Indigenous Teacher Education Bursary
Established in November 2015 by Nancy Gray, BA'77 and her husband William Gray. Last revised in September 2023. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students enrolled in a Bachelor of Education degree program. Preference will be given in the following priority order: (1) Indigenous students enrolled in the Indigenous Teacher Education Program (2) students enrolled in the Indigenous Teacher Education Program (3) Indigenous students. Applications are to be made to the Office of the University Registrar, Financial Aid and Awards.
Karey Jean Duggan (Oliphant) Memorial Bursary
Established in November 2005 by family and friends in memory of Karey Jean Duggan (nee Oliphant), B.A./B.Sc.(Eng) 1995, and awarded on the basis of financial need to full- or part-time undergraduate and graduate women students with one or more children returning after a period of two or more years to University education. Preference will be given to students who are in the Faculty of Education.
Education '97 Bursary
Established in May 2001 by the class of Education '97 and awarded to a student registered in the Faculty of Education on the basis of financial need.
Education ThankQ Memorial Bursary
Established in April 2006 by the Education Class of 2004 and the Faculty of Education in memory of Education students John Raycroft and Jocelyn Stevens. Awarded on the basis of financial need to students in the Faculty of Education.
Faculty of Education Bursaries
Established from donations made by friends and awarded to students on the basis of financial need who are enrolled in any year of study in a Concurrent or Consecutive Education program.
Asger Jensen Lifelong Learner Bursary
Established in October 2022 by Ena Holtermann, BA 2004, BEd 2004, MA 2009, in memory of her father, Asger Jensen. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students enrolled in a Bachelor of Education degree program. Preference will be given to students enrolled in any multi-session plan.
Dr. John Freeman Bursary in Education
Established in June 2018 by John I. Freeman in memory of his son, Dr. John G. Freeman, B.A. 1976, B.Ed. 1977, M.A. 1990, a dedicated teacher and mentor of many graduate students during his 20 year career in the Faculty of Education at Queen's University. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students enrolled in a Masters or Doctoral degree program in the Faculty of Education.
Henry Jackson Family Bursary
Established in March 2007 by a bequest from the estate of W. Henry (Harry) Jackson, B.A. 1947, and awarded on the basis of financial need to undergraduate students registered in any year of study in a Concurrent Education program or the Consecutive Education program at Queen's University. Preference will be given to graduates of secondary schools located in Kingston, Ontario.
Walter F. Light Bursaries for Graduate Students in Education
Established by gifts from the late Walter F. Light, Sc. 1949, LL.D. 1981, former chair of the Queen's University Board of Trustees, and CEO and Chair of Northern Telecom, Margaret Light, Arts 1947, and gifts in memory of Walter F. Light. Awarded on the basis of financial need to full-time students in graduate programs offered by the Faculty of Education. Applications are to be made to the Office of the University Registrar, Student Awards by 31 October.
Arthur Mandell Education Bursary
Established in March 2001 by friends and the Education class of 1999 in memory of Arthur Mandell, B.A. 1965, LLB 1978, who was a professor in the Faculty of Education (1970-1998). This bursary honours Professor Mandell's commitment to all students. In keeping with his belief that education should be accessible to everyone, this bursary assists those in financial need to study at Queen's Faculty of Education.
Lisa Marie McDorman Memorial Award
Established in June 2008 by Edward McDorman, B.Sc.(Eng.) 1957, and Elsie McDorman, B.Ed. 1973, in memory of their daughter Lisa Marie McDorman, B.A. 1987. Awarded to full-time students in the Bachelor of Education program on the basis of demonstrated financial need, academic achievement, and community involvement/extra-curricular activities.
Gladys R. Munnings Bursary in Education
Established by Gladys R. Munnings (B.A. Honours, 1932; LLD, 1976) and awarded on the basis of financial need to student(s) registered in the Faculty of Education.
Milton Frederick Pummell Bursary
Established by Mrs. Margarette Pummell in memory of her husband, Milton Frederick Pummell, B.A. 1932 (B. Paed, Toronto), who was the Director of Education for the St. Catharines Board of Education and also worked as an adult education consultant to school boards on behalf of the Canadian Association for Adult Education. The bursary is to be awarded on the basis of financial need to a consecutive or final year concurrent teacher candidate enrolled in the Bachelor of Education or Diploma in Education program.
Donna B. Rediger Award
Established in May 2014 by the estate of Donna Rediger, B.A. 1960, and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and academic achievement to students in the Masters of Education program in the Faculty of Education.
A. M. Robertson Bursary
Established in memory of Alexander Morton Robertson, M.A. 1896. Awarded annually on the basis of merit and need to a student enrolling in a program in the Faculty of Education leading to a teaching certificate in the Sciences.
Irwin Talesnick Science Education Bursary
Established by the organizing committee of ChemEd 89, in recognition of the contribution made by Professor Irwin Talensick to the teaching of Science and Chemistry. Awarded on the basis of financial need to Consecutive and Final Year concurrent B.Ed. students in the Intermediate/Senior program option taking two teaching subjects from Biology, Chemistry or Physics. Students taking one of these sciences as a first teaching subject and Mathematics as a second subject are also eligible.
Neil Yorke-Slader & Nepean All-City Jazz Bursary
Established in May 2020 by the alumni of the Nepean All-City Jazz Band in honour of their friend and mentor, Neil Yorke-Slader, BEd 1981. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to undergraduate students in any year of study in a Bachelor of Education degree program in the Faculty of Education. Preference will be given to students pursuing instrumental or vocal music as a teaching subject.
