In today's multi-cultural Canada those preparing to provide spiritual and religious care in multifaith settings must be familiar with a variety of faith traditions besides their own.
The Master's program is designed for persons preparing for work in spiritual and religious care in a pluralist context, such as a hospital, home for the aged, nursing home or other long-term care facility, prison, university, the military, or parish nursing. It provides foundational training in the Christian tradition as well as formation in religious pluralism through course work and a CPE unit. The program provides academic preparation for professional certification by the Ontario Multi-faith Council, which certifies persons as competent in the area of multifaith practice.
The MTS in Spiritual and Religious Care normally involves two years of full-time studies or its equivalent in part-time studies. Students select their course electives in consultation with their faculty advisor.
The degree is awarded by Queen's University on the recommendation of the Faculty of Queen's School of Religion.
Applicants must have a three-year baccalaureate degree (B.A.) or equivalent; normally with a minimum cumulative average of 75 percent. Applicants must also be admitted to the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care (CASC) Clinical Pastoral Education program as part of this admissions process.
