RAQ Pot- Picnic

Queen’s University Biology Station

Elbow Lake Environmental Education Centre

The Elbow Lake Environmental Education Centre (ELEEC) is the result of an agreement between the Queen’s University Biological Station (QUBS) and the Nature Conservancy of Canada(NCC).  The Education Centre was created in June, 2011 to serve as a major site for environmental outreach and education for QUBS.  The Manager is Mrs. Carolyn Bonta.

On June 21. members will gather for the annual RAQ  picnic at the ELEEC main pavilion, a onelevel facility that includes a dining area, a kitchen, and toilet / shower facilities.  Outside the pavilion, there are picnic tables, a large patio, and a wonderful view of Elbow Lake which is only meters away.  The site is very user friendly for members who may have mobility issues.  There are pedestrian trails for those who wish to explore the site, but remember that the property is being managed for conservation purposes.  If you go for a walk, please stay on the designated hiking trails.

Dr. Stephen Lougheed, Director of the QUBS, and several students will join us and talk to us

about the research and other activities that take place at the site.

PLEASE BRING:

A contribution to the pot-luck lunch (main course or salad or dessert to serve 6 – 8) with a serving utensil and your drink.  Those not inclined to cook could go shopping for an item to share.  For example, an appetizer, or a platter of fresh fruit, or a dessert would be a great contribution.

DIRECTIONS:

Take Division Street/Perth Road north to North Shore Crescent (approx. 17 km from Highway 401).  North Shore Crescent is immediately after the Loughborough Lake boat ramp which is on the left side of the road.

Turn right on North Shore Crescent and drive to North Shore Road (approx. 0.3 km).

Turn right on North Shore Road and drive to Hewlett Packard Lane (approx. 5.7 km).  At the entrance to Hewlett Packard Lane there is a Queen’s University / Nature Conservancy of Canada sign identifying the site.

Turn left on Hewlett Packard Lane and drive for approx. 1.9 km. to the main pavilion, building #1500.  There is parking outside the pavilion.

NOTE:

It takes approximately 35 minutes to drive from Highway 401 to the ELEEC pavilion, depending on traffic and the speed of travel.
