Selection of 2017-2018 Major Admission Award Recipients

The Office of the University Registrar (Student Awards), in collaboration with the Retirees Association of Queen’s (RAQ), would like to extend an invitation to all Queen’s retired members of RAQ to participate in the selection of the 2017-2018 Major Admission Award recipients.

To all RAQ members:

Each year a growing number of Queen’s faculty participate as ‘readers’ in the selection of award recipients. In 2008, as part of a collaborative venture with the RAQ, we invited all Queen’s retirees in the RAQ to participate. We have had a great response rate over these past few years from members willing to participate in this selection process. Readers play an integral and essential role in the selection of candidates for the Major Admission Awards. Their participation contributes to the credibility of the process and reinforces the importance the University places on attracting top-ranked students to Queen’s.

The Major Admission Award Program is an opportunity to recognize and attract exceptional students to Queen’s. Each year, Queen’s offers more than 70 Major Admission Awards valued between $36,000 and $80,000 over 4 years of study. The recipients are exceptional students, from diverse backgrounds, who are not only top scholars, but have demonstrated outstanding leadership in their schools and community. Once at Queen’s, these students become part of our vibrant and diverse community full of high achieving, highly motivated students who interact with each other in ways that make the Queen's experience so unique.

Students in their final year of high school can apply for one or more of the Major Admission Awards by December 1, 2016. Last year, we received approximately 1,100 applications for consideration for a Major Admission Award.

Reader Responsibilities

As a reader, your role in the selection process would include reviewing and ranking a maximum of 25 applications. Detailed information about the ranking process will be included with your package of applications should you agree to participate.

The reader assessment and ranking is an independent assessment, and does not require you to meet with other selection committee members. The reading/ranking process will take approximately 12-15 hours and will be done in January 2017.

Important Dates

No later than Friday November 18:  Please respond if you are interested in participating as a reader by contacting Shelly West at 613-533-6000 extension 77107 or by email, major.awards@queensu.ca

Thursday January 5, 2017: Reader packages containing your group of Major Admission Award Applications will be sent to you by courier (we will have the packages ready for distribution prior to the December break and can make them available upon request if required).

Monday January 16, 2017:  Reader rankings are due back to the Student Awards Office (we accept faxes, emails, or drop-off in person).

On behalf of the Office of the University Registrar (Student Awards), I want to thank the RAQ for their continued interest in this program. We look forward to working with many of you. As many of our past readers have indicated to us, reading about these exceptional students and their accomplishments is very gratifying.

 With appreciation,
