Paediatric doctors coming, (Swazi Observer, 2006-02-23):-The Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) will send 10 paediatric specialists to the country after the official launch of the children’s clinic scheduled for tomorrow at the Prince of Wales sports ground. It will be opened by His Majesty King Mswati III. The establishment of the 1 400 square metre HIV clinic is a result of a joint venture between the government of Swaziland, Bristol Myers Squibb and the Baylor College of Medicine. The Bristol Myers foundation funded construction of the building to the tune of US$2 million (over E12 million). Government donated the piece of land on which the building is located and it, in conjunction with BCM, also takes care of the operations. This includes staffing and provision of running capital. BCM Vice President Nancy Calles said the specialists would be sent to beef up the already available staff. Currently, the clinic has two doctors and seven nurses. “The doctors will not all be stationed at the clinic but we, in partnership with the government of Swaziland, will ensure services are also accessed in the periphery,” stated Calles. Most of the doctors are from the United States. The vice president added that the project was not meant for profit-making.
